June 2008

The welcome arrival of Keith Harrison and Brian McKenna (from St Johns Buildings) adds further strength and depth to our team. We have now attracted 8 new members since February 2008 and look forward to facing the challenges of the criminal bar with renewed energy and determination.

Howard Bentham QC and Martin Walsh prosecuted Jonathan Davies who was convicted at Liverpool Crown Court on 26th June, after a trial which lasted 4 months. Mr Davies was extradited from Spain to face the money laundering indictment. His conviction followed an unsuccessful defence appeal to the Court of Appeal against an early evidential ruling by the trial judge. Sentence is due to be passed in December.

New Members at Peel Court

The recently published Chambers Clients Guide to the UK Legal
Profession – 2007 has this to say about some of our members

Crime

“Peel Court Chambers have a very great standing in the market. The set is doubly blessed in enjoying both a continued throughput of top-quality instructions and for being home to some of the best trial advocates in the region. Michael Shorrock QC (now a Door Tenant) impresses peers with his “simply brilliant manner in court: he has this lovely quiet way of expressing himself and draws the jury, and everyone else, in. Similarly, Richard Marks QC was commended to researchers for being a “stylistically brilliant performer”, while Stephen Meadowcroft is another who plays well before juries: “They love him for being nice, friendly and, ultimately, devastatingly effective. I’ve never seen anything like it” said one impressed peer. Also at the set are the new silk Andrew O’Byrne QC and William Baker who were both recognized as being “able to hold their own with the best of them”.”

Licensing

“Martin Walsh of Peel Court Chambers is “straight as a die” and a “thorough and effective” junior. In the past year he successfully reversed the revocation of a licence for a club in Blackpool and handled a significant proportion of work for one of the country’s largest bookmakers. He has also been advising a number of potential casino licensees on the likely content of the Gambling Bill”
