Martin qualified as a Solicitor in 1979 and practised in the fields of crime, licensing, child care and mental health law before transferring to the Bar in 1990. 

He has built a national reputation for his work in the area of liquor licensing and betting and gaming and is rated as a leading practitioner in these fields by the Chambers guide to the UK legal profession. Martin is regularly instructed to act on behalf of large national PLC companies and also acts for one of the countries largest bookmakers. He has appeared in a number of high profile cases and has been at the forefront of developments following the implementation of the Licensing Act 2003 and the Gambling Act 2005. Martin has also developed an expertise in the field of Judicial Review.

Martin is regularly instructed to prosecute and defend in serious criminal cases arising out of investigations undertaken by the National Crime Squad and the Serious Organised Crime Agency. He has defended in a number of high profile Murder cases and has substantial experience in defending in cases of serious drug importation and complex fraud.

Martin has been sitting as a Crown Court Recorder since 2001
