Katie Jones was called to the Bar in 2003. She was educated at Shrewsbury High School and took a degree in Law from the University of Birmingham.She represented her University in national mooting competitions and obtained a Prince of Wales Scholarship from Gray’s Inn. Katie undertook work placements in a solicitor’s firm prior to coming to the Bar.
She has been a member of Peel Court since completing her pupillage in Chambers with David Pickup as her Pupil Supervisor.
Katie has a predominantly Criminal Practice. She undertakes a mix of Prosecution and Defence work, and has experience of advocacy before a wide range of tribunals. She has been led by senior members of Chambers in complex criminal cases for the Prosecution and Defence. Katie has appeared before the Court of Appeal on a number of occasions, and was Counsel for one of the Appellants in the case of R v S & 8 others [2005] EWCA Crim 3616, a case providing further clarification following the case of R v Lang.
In addition to publicly funded criminal work, Katie is regularly instructed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs in Condemnation Hearings, Cash Detention and Forfeiture Applications and in VAT and Duties Tribunal Appeals. She is a member of the Revenue and Customs group within Chambers.
Katie has an expanding practice in Prison Law, and regularly represents prisoners at Adjudication Hearings. She also regularly advises in writing in relation to prison law matters and undertakes Parole Board Hearings. She is a member of the Prison Law Team in Chambers, and is keen to continue to develop this area of her practice.
